Mouth Rot (Infectious Stomatitis)

Mouth rot is most often a bacterial infection of the mouth and associated structures (nose, tongue, etc.) caused by various bacteria. The bacteria are usually found in the environment and only cause a problem when the mouth suffers some trauma or when the reptiles immune system is compromised by poor husbandry.

Over time, the cartilage of the nose can be destroyed, leaving a disfigured face. The reptile will often stop eating leading to a weakened state which can be fatal if left untreated.

Factors that lead to mouth rot include: poor nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, mineral imbalances, poor sanitary conditions, improper heating, trauma and overall poor management.

Treatment consists of correcting poor management factors and treating the bacterial infection with injectable, oral and topical antibiotics. Sometimes a culture is necessary to select the proper antibiotic.

Prevent mouth rot in the first place by maximizing the environment and diet of your pet. Practice good hygiene. If mouth rot occurs or is suspected, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential in preventing disfigurement or death.
